NSW: Premier seeks urgent meeting with chief justice

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR is seeking an urgent meeting with the state's chief
justice amid escalating outrage over sentences given to the youths who pack-raped two
teenage girls.

The premier will also meet with the New South Wales Judicial Commission on Thursday
to examine ways of ensuring rapists are dealt tougher sentences in line with community
expectations.

Radio talkback callers have jammed switchboards with suggestions from public floggings
to punishment under the religious laws of the offenders.

Two brothers were yesterday jailed for no more than four years each over the attacks
in Sydney' south-west in September last year.

The maximum sentence for aggravated sexual assault is 20 years.
