Vic: Arson squad probes fire that kills three children

MELBOURNE, April 13 AAP - The death of three young children in a house fire early today
is being investigated by arson squad detectives.

Police spokeswoman Maree McKinnon said two girls, aged 11 and six years, and a boy
aged nine were killed in the blaze at Springvale South, in Melbourne's south-east.

Five other people in the single-storey brick home at the time of the fire at about
2am (AEDT) had escaped, with two treated in hospital, she said.

It was not known whether the three children were from the same family.

Ms McKinnon said arson squad detectives had arrived at the scene but so far there was
no indication of the cause of the blaze, which caused extensive damage to the home.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) said five trucks attended.

Ms McKinnon said the fire was first noticed by a neighbour just after 2am, and that
soon after an elderly woman and young girl were seen running from the house.

Those two were taken to the Monash Medical Centre for suspected smoke inhalation, she said.

Another three people managed to escape the flames, she said.
